Part of Ekho Surf's Hotel in Bentota, L'Heritage offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. On offer is both an A'la carte menu serving Sri Lankan cuisines, as well as traditional English buffet food.
Breakfast began at 7.00am, but as we arrived at 5.30am, we headed downstairs at 8.30am. On our first morning, we were surprisingly impressed with the varied selection of food.
First Impressions
If you know me, you know I love a good old traditional English breakfast. So when I found out a buffet was on offer, I was in my element. But after my first plate, I wasn't entirely impressed. Who can get an English breakfast wrong? Nobody... so I thought!
The baked beans were very hard, and after trying every different type off eggs (scrambled, fried, omelette) they all had pieces of shell in there. I felt like I was eating sand most mornings. I later opted to have boiled eggs, french toast and mushrooms. But even the french toast was a reach. It was very soggy- nothing like the french toast I'm used too.
Breakfast quickly got disheartening, and I pondered on the thought of spending extra money to eat elsewhere. But as we had already paid for a bed and breakfast holiday deal, It didn't make much sense. After a few days, I solely relied on burro bananas, greek yoghurt, and toast - but I wasn't very pleased. My favourite thing in the buffet, were most probably the grilled mushrooms - (and that was before they started adding too much salt.)
We ate out every day for lunch, trying a variety of local Sri Lankan bakeries, cafes, and restaurants, and luckily, we were able to really enjoy some local dishes.
Starting Over | Second Chances
We we knackered and starving after a long day out, and we decided to stay in to have dinner. We had yet to try L'Heritage's dinner options, so we thought we would give the restaurant a second chance - this time, for dinner.
Dinner was a little better, with buffet options also available. But for the price, unfortunately we were hardly impressed. Dinner roughly costed us around £17- £19 per person, which some may think is fair, but if the food is just as disheartening as breakfast, then surely you wouldn't be happy.
We tried out the Sri Lankan curries, but after a good few days eating out, we knew that the REAL Sri Lankan curries were everywhere else except inside L'Heritage. We had hoped to try the famous Sri Lankan Mutton rolls and Hoppers, but unfortunately we couldn't find them anywhere! It would have been nice for L'Heritage to offer different things on the menu, every so often - (except a variation of eggs!)
The Ekho Surf Hotel treated us well and I wouldn't rule out a return, but unfortunately, The L'Heritage restaurant is just not for me. The menu options are ok but better cooking preparations is in dire need to help this restaurant. Sadly, The breakfast was just a little below average for me.
Tuna Turner Restaurant
With Serene beachfront views, Ekho Surf hotel also offers a beachfront restaurant called Tuna Turner. Open until 10.00pm, Tuna Turner has a nice, cool and relaxing vibe. We sat and drank in Tuna Turner a number of times and enjoyed the view of Bentota beach.
Prices for juices can come in a little costly - a small glass of lime juice costed us about £5 - £6, while a large bottle of beer (that we shared) costed us somewhere near the same price. We bought two portions of chips, which were fairly small portions for the price.
But sometimes it's hard to complain, especially when the staff are very sweet.

Tuna Turner did have a little more snacks and fresh seafood (which I wasn't keen on trying) on offer, but as we were trying to keep our costs low, we opted for lunch outside of the hotel. I believe Tuna Turner has different chefs, so i'm sure their food is worth trying. They were kind enough to offer us fries although they were not on the menu, and that was a very kind gesture.
